  • What is a Biomedical Engineer?

    Robert A. Linsenmeier

    Robert A. Linsenmeier is Professor in the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Neurobiology & Physiology, and Ophthalmology at Northwestern University. He was chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department at Northwestern from 1997 to 2002, and Director of the Integrated Science Program in the College of Arts and Sciences (1993-1996). He has served as Associate Director of the VaNTH Engineering Research Center for Bioengineering Educational Technologies since it was founded in 1999, and is Co-director of the Northwestern Center for Engineering Education Research. He is the meeting chair for the 3 rd Biomedical Engineering Education Summit Meeting in June, 2008. His research is partly in biomedical engineering and physiology curriculum, and partly in retinal physiology, particularly oxygen transport related to retinal disease.

    He is a Fellow and former Vice President (2005-2007) of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). He was the Bette and Neison Harris Professor of Teaching Excellence (2003 - 2006), and received the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award from the Biomedical Engineering Division of the American Society of Engineering Education in 2007.
